SEMINAR: Positive Behaviors for Abrasive Manager:

Tools for Executives and Human Resource Professionals

Correcting the abrasive behavior of managers or employees is one of the toughest jobs executives and supervisors face. The typical responses leaders have to receiving complaints about bullying conduct are (1) to avoid dealing with it, (2) to invalidate the complaining employee seeking help, or (3) to rationalize it as “just” a personality conflict.

This one-day seminar for managers and human resource professionals shows you exactly how to coach abrasive managers to shift their behavior toward positive impact. You will leave with skills and confidence to provide feedback, overcome resistance, and to set expectations for acceptable behavior.

In Part One you will:

  • Learn about the fears and predictable defense responses
  • Shift out of negative interactional cycles and lead people to strong working relationships
  • Gain insight into why people use abrasive behavior
  • Create the foundation for respectful interactions

In Part Two you will learn how to:

  • Accurately differentiate between acceptable conflict and destructive conflict
  • Intervene calmly and confidently to shift abrasiveness into cohesiveness
  • Use specific techniques that address defensiveness such as denial, withdrawal, and counterattacks.
  • Hold the abrasive employee accountable for making behaviors changes and define the consequences for not doing so

CALIFORNIA AB 2053: Workplace Abrasive Conduct Law

New Requirements & Responsibilities for Harassment Training Programs

AB 2053 became effective January 1, 2015. It requires California employers with 50 or more employees to provide training in the “prevention of abusive conduct,” along with sexual harassment training.

Legal experts say California’s new anti-bullying legislation may set a new national standard for employment law compliance. The intent of California law AB 2053 is to start the conversation and build supervisory awareness of what abusive conduct is and their role and responsibility for dealing with it.

Now is the time to educate your supervisors to recognize abusive conduct and train them in practical skills to prevent and respond to unacceptable behaviors. Understanding the provisions of this new law will guide your process and progress in developing appropriate training procedures.

In this seminar we show you how to use your existing framework of company policies, procedures, and professional conduct standards to integrate abrasive conduct prevention into your sexual harassment training.

Topics include:
The range of abusive behaviors – from simple incivility to extreme bullying – and their relative impact on employees;
How to recognize, act quickly, and respond to an employee's report of bullying;
Identifying risk factors in the workplace, assessing their potential impact, and taking actions to prevent, control and monitor them; Supervisory skills for working with individuals and groups using positive people practices.
